One man’s trash is this woman’s treasure!

Last Sunday, I traveled almost 5 hours, via Greyhound, down to Norfolk, to attend VA fashion week (totally worth it!! And blogpost to come!!). I prepped on all of the designers, just in case I got a chance to speak to any of them. Luck comes to the prepared.  Midway during the show, they announced the Project Earth Day designers from 2 days before. Wait, what! Wow! These dresses were made from what?!?

I thought these pieces are fantastic and ecofriendly?!?  I have got tFullSizeRendero learn more.

So a little bit about the contest: you have to be a fashion designer of any skill level; they received a kit back in March containing CozyPure Organic Bedding Company fabric scraps (knits, wool) and discarded metals, plastics, paints/dyes. The only non-kit items allowed were needles, threads, glue, velcro and snaps.

Then they announced the winner, an unassuming beautiful female designer, who had been sitting right across from me for the last hour and a half!

DESIGNER DU JOUR – CHRISTY FREDERICK.

So I was fortunate enough to have an impromtu chat with her, this time luck came to the unprepared 🙂

She is a designer of her own label Duchess Megan Nicole Designs. Her winning outfit pretty much exemplifies her love for couture. She gravitates towards separates, sportwear and specializes in “Corsetry!!!”  She obtains inspiration from 19th century French design. She is well educated and well-versed in fashion design, graduating from VCU and has a MFA from Old Dominion.

She is such a wealth of knowledge and clear skill. I mean how many designers do you know can reuse a mattress to give it new life and a chance to grow into something new?  She is the definition of versatility: a mother, designer, and educator.  I can not wait to see what the future holds for her.
