Face your Fears better yet, Embrace them!

Easier said than done, am I right? Recently I’ve seen this in action, from an incredibly strong black woman who you wouldn’t think feared anything… my beautiful mother-in-law.  In September, she married her high school sweetheart. IMG_0112
Their paths diverged while in college.  Both of them are succeeding in their careers. Both of them have personal achievements, he married for decades and had 4 children, now is widowed; she had an amazing child, Brent, who is now my hot and wonderful husband. IMG_0084 From when they were separated, they grew through their separated lives, to the confident people they are today. Despite fears of the past, future, potential judgment of others, they pursued their newfound love. IMG_0034

So Commendable!

As a woman, despite my parents doing the best they can (I mean my dad still calls me his princess) … I have insecurities. While my mother-in-law was branching into real-life unchartered territory, it actually made me realize my fears are so minimal.  I grew up an athlete, pretty much fit, even with previous pregnancies, my body bounced back pretty well.  My mother-in-law’s wedding was 5 weeks after having a baby.  Making motherhood look good is kinda my thing.  Fashion is kinda my thing.  And yet, I was nervous about how I looked. Knowing that no-one would even care, I just was quietly fixated on it.

I’m currently weighing in at 188lbs, but used to hovering at 160lbs,

NYFW last yr

This meant my dresses no longer fit.  I usually encourage myself to workout and lose weight in an healthy way, by not giving in and buying a larger clothing size.  But obviously, my hand was forced in this event.  First, I can’t or shouldn’t really try to lose weight while breastfeeding, I fear I’d lose my supply.  Second, with four kids and now I’m back to work, I’m really struggling to see when I have the time or energy to workout.  Basically when I’m at work, my hubs has the newborn and when he’s at work, I have the newborn.  I’m sure I’ll figure it out. But for now, what to wear???

At work the other day, a nurse said while looking at pictures of the newborn, “Don’t worry you’ll lose your belly… why arent you wearing Spanx?” Now, I consider work a safe place to be yourself, after all I’ve dedicated my life to medicine and taking care of patients.  My gut shouldn’t matter.  I definitely felt self-conscious, as everyone then looked at my belly.   I don’t own Spanx but I thought maybe I should invest, save myself from these unsolicited comments.

As a great personal stylist, to myself lol, I thought, Bold colors, Patterns, the louder the better! I went to my go-to sites, I wasn’t sure of my size, I kinda assumed a 12.  I checked out Rue-la-la, Zara, Gilt, but it wasn’t until ASOS that I hit the jackpot.   Now that I had my blue dress, I had to dress my cute accessories, aka my kids lol.

3 of the 4 kids

I tried it on, and it fit well! I’m 5’10” and it was perfectly below the knee, the color looked just like the picture, I mean when does that ever happen?!? IMG_0094

So, I felt I looked good, hubs approved, I got compliments at the wedding. All good right? But I looked at some wedding pictures and I was bit horrified.

You could see the complete lower outline of my gut, and my belly button! (I’m one of those people with an outie, and am extremely self-conscious about it.) I was thinking Oh Why, didn’t I buy some Spanx.

Then I thought…

Motherhood is a blessing.  My body imperfections are a badge of honor. Like my mother-in-law, you got to not only Face your Fears but Embrace them.  And try your darndest not to be paralyzed by them.  Inspiration is everywhere, I hope this post gave you a little.

Gotta see some longhorns if your in Texas, right?

Well, I can honestly say I did not choose an outfit fitting for my location, but excited to rock my lastest dress from Dorothy Perkins.

Gray like Indiana’s sky – #StyleMuseMonday

Sooo my daughter’s volleyball journey took us to Indianapolis.  And it was time for my pregnancy chic debut, lol… Sike, more pregnancy bump acceptance, since for 4 full days I would not be in scrubs.

So, despite the fact we were there to cheer, encourage my daughter and of course assist with the college recruiting process (there were a lot of big name colleges there and some were actually watching her!)… I had to represent for those preggo fashionistas:

So I checked ahead and it was supposed to approximately 60 degrees but raining. And on a gloomy day, its okay to blend in with a little gray of your own 🙂

So I hopped on a London maternity and children’s boutique called JoJo Maman Bébé -with roots in French nautical style, I heard of from instagram! As I read more about this brand, it is right down my alley, “supremely comfortable,” “fashionable and well made, but still affordable.” (direct quotes from their website)

First, I wanted a nice cardigan like sweater, that was of great sturdy quality, heavy but free-flowing for those occasional pregnancy hot flashes.

1st my outerwear … a Knitted Charcoal Maternity Kimono

2nd a maxi dress, with a little slit to show some of my nonexistent calf muscles, lol… this one is from Old Navy

…And if you want black I’d choose this Dorothy Perkins Black Jersey Maxi Dress !

3rd my rendition of the white sneaker trend, these ultra comfortable,  Puma’s Round Toe Lace-Up Sneakers

Near Indiana Convention Center

I hope you enjoyed this look! Check out next week, for my pregnancy outfit journey… And any advice for tall pregnant folk like me, I’d appreciate!

Excuse me, Are you a model? – Our NYC Chronicles Pt.3

…Is what the photographer asked my daughter. But he wasn’t the only one that day. Now during New York Fashion Week, there are many beautiful 6 foot tall women walking around so it’s safe to assume that.  It was interesting to see my daughter’s reaction, typically very shy, introverted girl, apparently became someone else.  We were at the Couture Fashion Week 8pm show at the Crowne Plaza Times Square.  By the way, the one perk to staying at this hotel is your outfit for the night did not have to be weather-dependent.

Now we had general admission seats, but after the hostess saw my daughter, she asked if we mind being in the VIP front row section.

Then while we were sitting in our fabulous new seats, a photographer pulled her up onto the runway to snap a few pics, and ask her a few questions, and she was more than willing to have this spontaneous interview! I mean I stand corrected, I thought my fabulous pink pleated maxi skirt would steal the show, not my daughter, lol…

I just sat back in amazement, I vaguely could overhear them talking about how she plays club volleyball and stuff. Then she sat down as if nothing happened, but grinning ear to ear. It was kinda cool, I know she’s beautiful but it was nice she got a little unsolicited attention, because as you know high school girls can be mean!

So, since I was not media, I wasn’t as psycho about taking pictures but my daughter on the other was just snapchatting away! Here are a few looks:

Meggie Hadiyanto Couture – Top Indonesian Designer

Next Designer Diana Mahrach – Luxury Couture

I mean these collections were fantastic, the designers are sooo talented! I know where to go once I have the baby in August and get my body back in order, lol.

I mean I squeezed into that pink pleated skirt , that I purchased 3 months ago for this one night!

Well, this concluded the New York Fashion Week part of our girls’ weekend… but the night was still young, as you’ll see the final post, soon to come!

A little Art, A little Fashion – Our NYC Chronicles Pt.1

Sooo, its that time of the year again, and I brought a new person along with me, my daughter!!! She’s 17 and its time to introduce to the awesomeness of NYC and Fashion Week.

It’s hard to gauge a teenager, cause they hate you one moment and love you the next, but she seemed super excited!!! Since she was there I felt that I shouldn’t cover any events as media, because you’re so busy interviewing, checking out behind the scenes, and taking pics of the models/collections; that it can be slightly difficult to relax because you want to cover every aspect, as opposed to taking it all in as a whole. Plus, anyone who has a teenage girl, knows they demand all of your attention!

Immediately after school, we went straight to the Megabus up to NYC. I’ve learned that you can judge how much fun your kid is having by the amount of snapchatting they do, and trust me we’re going over our data plan this month!

We arrived around 745pm, and I knew it’d be a great sign because we caught our first cab with ease!

We checked into the fabulous and perfectly located Crowne Plaza Times Square. img_1454

I decided to play it safe and go to the 9pm show of Art Loves Fashion which supports AIDs research.

Angel Orensanz Center, Lower Manhatta

…despite our VIP status, all of the seats were filled and we hung out in standing room only However, we’re all about the fashion not how our feet feel in heels, lol.

Checking out the Art while we wait…

By the way, the 3 designers were so talented!

My Notes: Loved the blue/black theme; scalloped skirt & silky black/white with sequins stole the show!

My Notes: Perfect soft pastels; loved the geometric bold patterns; I’m addicted to pleated clothes so I loved the silk/pleated mixed items

My Notes: Very well tailored pants with great bombers; found a new love for paisley; loved the hair/makeup!

So I was nervous that my daughter didn’t enjoy it since we had to stand the whole time, but she loved it!!! We then had to stand in the dirty show with a lovely chill in the air trying to hail a cab. Fortunately a nice photographer from the show shared a cab with us.

Back at the hotel, we crashed for it was such a long day then of course spent our entire food budget on room service lol! img_1495

Stay tuned for further posts of our New York City Chronicles!!!

The Beginning… 38th & 4!!!

We took this picture right after we found out about 38 & 4th… No its not a street in Manhattan… It’s a new sorta unexpected addition to our little family of 5! As you can see hubs and I express excitement a little differently.

So each child was at a different time, the 17 year old, afer I graduated early from the great Johns Hopkins University. The 8 yr old during post-graduate training. The 4 yr old during the height of my career working 100 hrs a week.  Now I was definitely in a spot where I felt like I was sorta understanding this organized chaos that is my life.IMG_0499.JPG

I mean there’s no cruise control when your a nanny-less type A career woman, wife, mother of 3, who does a little fashion writing for fun.  Anywho, I wanted to share this new journey with you guys, because there isnt a lot out there about being a working mom with 3 kids in such different stages of their little lives.  With one, I’m knee-deep in SATs and college volleyball recruiting; while the youngest has the stress of which toy to bring for Friday Show-n-Tell.

Anywho, every week or so I’m going to share the latest…

Week 12

Per usual, so far I do not have morning sickness, but the fatigue, man, is tremendous! And the moods… I just feel bad for my hubs, Brent.  I think the fatigue is becoming slightly manageable, and I have less of a need for car naps, during work. The anxiety is real for us, we took the Natera test, and we have another week before we get the results about any chromosomal abnormalities. Can’t worry too much though, this one is in God’s hands.

Eating Better

Tried Zoe’s Kitchen for the first time. Ordered the Rosemary Ham & Mozzarella Piadina, extra mozz hold the aioli. (It’s an italian flatbread sandwich, with grilled ham, mozzarella, mixed greens and lemon vinaigrette.)fullsizerender-27 Don’t worry, I know lunchmeat is bad, but as long as its heated to a certain temperature, which I requested, it’s all good. And I didnt eat the pasta salad, because gotta stay away from unpasteurized soft cheese, like feta 😦

Trying New Things

To deal with stress and learn how to relax, my daughter and I did Yoga at the Y for the first time ever a few days ago…

Anywho, that’s all for now.  If there’s any other soon-to-be moms that wanna chat about hopes, fears, or everything in between. Reach out!

**** Oh and don’t worry,  I still have a crazy busy New York Fashion Week planned in February. So far I plan on being media for Style Fashion Week, but definitely attending Harlem Fashion Week, and 3 others (to be determined). If everything continues to go well, I’m gonna have to shop for chic outfits with room for a bump! ****
